Getting a driver license is an important step in the life of a teen. Driver Education is part of this important step.
If a teen wants to get their driver license before the age of 18, they must take driver education.
Iowa law states that a student is required to receive 1800 minutes of classroom instruction as well as 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction in driver education.
Iowa Administrative rules state that a student should receive 6 hours of observation time. Students will receive their observation time when they are observing their driving partner's driving experience.
Students are also required to have at least 20 hours of driving experience with their parent(s) or someone over the age of 25. When the parent takes the teen to the Department of Transportation, they will be required to sign an avadavat stating that the teen has had the 20 hours of driving.
If you add up the hours required by law a student will spend at least 62 hours in the car and/or classroom while they are taking the driver education class.
These are the minimum requirements. As a parent you may require more of your teen.
We would encourage you to allow the student to drive whenever possible. This is the only way they will get the experience they need in order to become a good driver.
Driver Education, though viewed by many as an unimportant, is really the most important class they will take. A wrong decision while driving a car may take your child's life.
